Reflections on the future of sustainable architecture in the UK
In an era of unprecedented change, architecture must do more than just respond - it must lead. At RISE, we see every challenge not as a limitation, but as an invitation to rethink what’s possible. Whether it’s the housing crisis, the role of AI, or the shifting expectations of how we live, build and belong - architecture has a responsibility to shape the future with courage, creativity, and care.
☉ Here’s how we’re thinking about what comes next.
Thoughtfully designed low-energy homes in London, blending contemporary form with community-focused sustainable living.
There’s a tension in the air across the UK. Demand for housing continues to rise, and yet the planning system struggles to evolve fast enough. The Green Belt, once a visionary tool for containment, has become a line in the sand—used more often to block than to balance.
We believe it’s time to reframe the conversation.
→ It’s not about abandoning the Green Belt
→ It’s about redefining its purpose for the 21st century
We must look to densify sustainably, reimagine brownfield sites, and unlock policies that encourage regenerative development—not just reactive growth. Homes shouldn’t just be numerous; they should be nourishing. They should meet the evolving needs of real communities and be designed with longevity and joy in mind.
If sustainability is about more than carbon, then community must be at the heart of the brief. Too often, buildings are imposed on neighbourhoods like foreign objects. But when you invite people in—to share their insights, their stories, their priorities—something deeper happens.
Buildings become more resilient. Places become more loved.
And the architecture? It gains soul.
There’s a balance to strike, of course. Collaboration must have direction, and design must retain clarity. But ignoring the voices of those who live in and around a site is a missed opportunity for genuine impact. In our work, we listen early, deeply, and often.
Artificial Intelligence is no longer a concept on the horizon. It’s here—shaping workflows, suggesting optimisations, and opening up new avenues for creativity. But at RISE, we see it as an assistant, not a replacement. AI can crunch the numbers. But it cannot feel the rhythm of a space. It cannot hold a client’s uncertainty, or trace sunlight through a courtyard on a winter’s morning.
To us, AI is just another tool. A powerful one.
But it’s the hand that holds the pencil—and the heart that guides it—that really matters.
Great buildings are not born in spreadsheets. They begin with a clear purpose. Developers who take time to understand future occupants—how they live, what they value, where they’re headed—are the ones who create places that last.
We encourage developers to look beyond ROI and towards ROH: Return on Habitat.
→ What kind of life will this place enable?
→ How will it adapt, evolve, and age gracefully?
→ Is it rooted in its context, or does it ignore it?
Profit doesn’t have to come at the expense of purpose. In fact, the two are more aligned than ever.
In the UK, we’re blessed—and challenged—by our architectural inheritance. Our towns and cities are rich with memory, character, and craft. When designing in these contexts, we don’t see conservation as a limit. We see it as an opportunity to participate in a longer story.
Our aim is to create buildings that are both of their time and timeless. That speak the language of their surroundings without mimicking it. That know when to whisper and when to sing.
Climate change is not a future threat—it’s a current reality. The architecture profession must meet it head-on. That means designing for performance from the outset, prioritising low-embodied carbon materials, and pushing every project to go further.
Net-zero isn’t just a number.
It’s a shift in mindset.
☉ Retrofit before rebuild.
☉ Design for disassembly.
☉ Let the building breathe, filter, shade, and store.
At RISE, we aim to create architecture that not only performs but inspires. Because sustainability should feel good, too.
To those just starting out, we say this:
Don’t wait for permission. Don’t wait for the perfect project.
Learn fast. Stay curious. Find mentors who challenge you to think bigger—not just draw better. And remember: the most important structure you’ll ever design is the life you want to live. Build it with intention.
We’re a small team with big convictions. We work shoulder to shoulder. We question everything. We prototype, sketch, model, and walk our sites with muddy boots and open minds. And above all, we care. About people. About place. About the planet.
We believe architecture can - and should - do more.
At RISE, we believe the role of the architect is evolving—fast. But the core remains the same: to design spaces that lift people up. That honour the past, serve the present, and anticipate the future.
Whether you’re a developer, a dreamer, or somewhere in between, we’d love to help shape your next chapter.
