RISE Design Studio - Who we are and why it matters to you

Written by Sean Hill | May 1, 2023

There are a lot of architects in London. The affiliations and accreditations a practice holds are one of the more reliable ways of understanding what a studio actually stands for, beyond the portfolio.

Here is an honest account of ours and what they mean in practice.

ARB: the baseline, and why it matters

The Architects Registration Board is the statutory regulator for architects in the UK. ARB registration is a legal requirement to use the title "architect." It is not optional, and it is not honorary. It means we are qualified, insured, and accountable to a formal code of conduct.

If you are considering working with an architect, checking their ARB registration is the most basic due diligence you can do. It takes thirty seconds at arb.org.uk and confirms the person you are speaking to is who they say they are.

RIBA: chartered membership

The Royal Institute of British Architects is the professional body for architects in the UK. Chartered membership, the RIBA designation after a name, requires a specific level of education, examination, and ongoing professional development. It is a higher bar than registration alone.

In practical terms, working with a RIBA Chartered Practice means you have access to the RIBA Standard Form of Appointment, which is a client-protective contract, and a formal complaints procedure if something goes wrong. It also means the practice is committed to continued learning, which matters in a field that is changing as quickly as sustainable design.

Sean and Imran are both Chartered Members of RIBA. RISE Design Studio is a RIBA Chartered Practice.

In 2023, we were shortlisted for a RIBA Regional Award for our work on The Lexi Cinema and Hub in Kensal Rise, a project we are proud of for reasons that go beyond the recognition.

The Green Register: sustainability as practice, not positioning

The Green Register of Construction Professionals is a not-for-profit organisation for built environment professionals who are committed to sustainable construction. Membership requires active engagement, including a minimum of two days of training per year in sustainable building practice, not a one-off sign-up.

We joined because it reflected something we were already doing, not because we wanted a badge. The practice has been working on low-energy residential and commercial projects since we were founded in 2011. Passivhaus methodology, fabric-first retrofit, embodied carbon assessment: these are part of how we design, not services we offer on request.

The Green Register also maintains a good publicly available resource on sustainable building legislation and practice, which is worth bookmarking if you are in the early stages of thinking about a low-energy project.

Passivhaus Designer accreditation

Sean holds Passivhaus Designer accreditation from the Passivhaus Institute, the international body that sets and certifies the standard. This is a separate and specific qualification, distinct from general sustainability credentials, covering the technical design of buildings to Passivhaus performance levels.

Not every project we work on pursues full Passivhaus certification. But the principles behind the standard, reducing energy demand through fabric quality before relying on technology, inform how we approach every project from the first design conversation.

These are the affiliations we hold and what they actually mean. If you would like to talk through a project, we are always glad to have an early conversation before any formal appointment is made.

If you would like to talk through your project with the team, please do get in touch.
