Small Sites, Big Thinking: How Small-Scale Developments Can Transform Our Cities

☉ The Untapped Power of the Forgotten Plot
Not every great idea needs acres of land to grow. Some of the most impactful architecture begins in the gaps - the overlooked, the awkward, the ‘maybe one day’ sites wedged between warehouses, homes, or hedges. These small urban fragments are more than just leftovers. They’re the future of housing in our cities - if we dare to design differently.

At RISE, we believe small sites ask more of us, and we love that. They ask for clarity of vision, lightness of touch, and boldness of spirit. But most of all, they ask us to think beyond the conventional and embrace the opportunity to reimagine the city from the inside out.
☉ A Shift in the Urban Mindset
If we’re going to tackle the housing shortage without eating up more green belt land, the real battleground is already beneath our feet. Across London and other UK cities, countless underused and oddly-shaped parcels of land sit waiting to be reawakened.

→ Think tight plots shadowed by history, but ready for a new chapter.

☉ Constraints Are a Catalyst, Not a Curse
At RISE, constraints don’t slow us down—they sharpen our ideas.
Designing for small sites forces us to rethink everything. How can we bring light deep into narrow footprints? How do we preserve privacy in tight-knit streets? How do we use materials that speak both to their context and to the future?
We’ve tackled plots hemmed in by rear gardens, overshadowed by clinics, or lined up next to listed buildings. And every time, we’ve found a way to turn limits into something beautiful.

These aren’t generic homes dropped onto tricky sites—they’re buildings that belong exactly where they are. Buildings with purpose.
☉ Small Doesn’t Mean Simple
Let’s not sugar-coat it. Small-site development is tough. Gaining access to land, managing planning complexity, and fighting for funding can feel like an uphill sprint.
But the tide is beginning to turn. City leaders, including the GLA, are waking up to the potential of these plots. Initiatives like “Small Sites, Small Builders” are opening up public land and levelling the playing field. There's now a real effort to get this land into the hands of small developers, community groups, and architects who care deeply about making places better, not just making money.
That matters. Because it means architecture can be led by those who value human-scale, low-energy design. People like us. People like you.

Planning on small sites is a different beast. Overshadowing, privacy, access, fire strategy, and bin storage - all under a microscope.
