A £14.3 Billion Wake-Up Call

According to a new report by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), rogue builders have cost homeowners in the UK an estimated £14.3 billion over the past five years. That’s not just a number – it’s real people, real homes, real lives turned upside down.

Behind every unfinished loft or damp-ridden extension lies a family navigating the aftermath. A third of homeowners surveyed said they’d experienced low-quality work. One in five were left with incomplete jobs. Over a third had to absorb unexpected costs. And 15% reported a direct financial loss, averaging £1,759 each.

The common thread? A lack of regulation that allows unqualified traders to operate unchecked.

A Broken System That Needs Fixing

At the heart of the problem is a simple yet startling fact: in the UK, there’s currently no mandatory licensing scheme for domestic builders. That means anyone can set up shop and start work on your home without needing to prove competence, training, or accountability.

It’s a gap that leaves homeowners exposed and good builders frustrated. It damages the reputation of our entire industry and allows corner-cutting to thrive.

More worryingly, it undermines sustainability. When buildings need to be repaired or redone, we waste not just money but materials, energy, and time. Bad building is inherently unsustainable. And in a climate where every choice matters, we can no longer afford to let poor standards slide.

When Vulnerability Meets Poor Practice

The financial loss is only part of the story. The human cost runs deeper.

In the report, one homeowner described how they were exploited at their most vulnerable – just after the loss of their mother. They paid over £72,000 to a builder who abandoned the project, ignored building inspectors, and left their home uninhabitable. It was meant to be a space of remembrance and care. Instead, it became a site of trauma, debt, and despair.

These stories are too frequent. And they’re entirely preventable.
