Hopefield Avenue, Queen's Park - Arches, Light and Living with Nature

Victorian terraces in Queen’s Park carry a quiet dignity. At Hopefield Avenue, our proposal reimagines one such home with respect and invention, accentuating existing character while introducing architectural gestures that look to the future.

The design celebrates the subtle arches of the bay window and entrance door, extending them as a motif throughout the house. Arched openings connect the old with the new, framing views, shaping shade, and lending rhythm to the façade. Stone lintels and sills, painted white against the London stock brick, sharpen the composition while enhancing daylight.

Lowering the Ground, Raising the Possibilities

To unlock the full potential of the ground floor, we propose lowering the internal floor level. This simple move increases ceiling height, bringing a generosity of space that transforms how the home feels. The ground floor becomes a sequence of light-filled, connected rooms - kitchen, dining, pantry, utility and cloakroom - with two dedicated home offices embedded into the plan.

These workspaces are designed with the post-Covid world in mind: places that support focus, flexibility, and the realities of contemporary working life.

Lightwell and Canopy - Nature at the Heart

A carefully positioned lightwell channels daylight deep into the floor plan. Alongside it, the canopy between the side and rear extension has a circular opening to allow a small tree to grow through. Together, these moves bring greenery and natural light into the centre of the home, drawing the garden closer to everyday life.

This is biophilic design in practice - creating buildings that connect people with nature. It’s an approach proven to reduce stress, improve wellbeing, and foster creativity. By weaving natural elements into the architecture itself, the home becomes healthier, calmer, and more human.

Flexible Living on Every Level

Upstairs, the reconfigured bedrooms and ensuite provide clarity and calm. The top floor is conceived as a truly flexible space - equally suited as a gym, guest bedroom, or study. Rooflights above frame views of the sky, creating a sense of retreat and possibility at the top of the house.

This proposal builds upon Queen’s Park’s distinctive heritage, blending Victorian detail with contemporary craft. Arched rhythms, chamfered reveals, and the crisp white stone are reinterpreted for a new era of living.
